Youth Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County (YCW) was founded in 1979 as a program of Citizens’ Crime Watch of Miami-Dade County, Inc. YCW is a crime prevention program providing direct services to students and teachers in the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. It is designed to train students in crime prevention strategies through education, understanding and communication. YCW promotes a safe, clean and healthy school environment where students can truly learn without the distractions of illegal activity, violence and threats. It is a school-wide extra-curricular program that functions as a club. YCW School Coordinators work with school officials (YCW School Advisors) and students to help each club develop and tailor their program to meet the needs unique to their own school. In the 1997-1998 school year, over 187 schools (K-12) had active YCW programs.

School coordinators, along with members of our Speakers Bureau, make presentations in the schools on a variety of topics: gun awareness, conflict management, peer mediation, drug and gang prevention, peer pressure, general safety, values and manners, personal and social responsibility, among others. Advisors and club presidents work with school coordinators to coordinate special activities for Red Ribbon Week, STOP DAY, Black History Month, Career Week, Student Services Week, and other school events involving public safety.

Annual county-wide events include poster and essay contests for elementary, middle and senior high students; an Awards Luncheon; an Advisor/Student Training Workshop; and a two-day conference for elementary, middle and senior high students. A Time Capsule project was conducted at our First Annual Conference in 1996. New in 1999 is a student magazine that publishes students’ artwork, poems, and stories related to crime prevention, non-violence, and other student concerns. In addition, we continually initiate innovative projects, including fundraising events, field trips, and skating parties.

An Advisory Committee of 15 volunteer members from our community, as well as a student and a teacher, guide the program.
